The start of Delica-Ci's

Ever since i got home from the great CA I have been attempting to get my business started! I did get one order for a cake, but it sadly got cancelled. There will be more, I know it!

The very first week getting back I started my sister, Christina's, birthday cake!
That was an absolute blast. It was my very first Ciara-cake. All my own design.
The thursday before I left, i got the priviledge of staying late after work and sculpting with Lindsey Sinatra! Oh that was fun.

The finished product was a ton of abstract peacock feathers and a white chocolate clay peacock! The feathers got painted at home. My mom got to learn allot in doing that.

The fillings of the white cake were: White chocolate mousse, Raspberry mousse and Vanilla Bean Buttercream. I was so happy that it was a hit! It makes me so happy when my food makes people happy!

I will continue to attempt my hand at building business and creating deliciousness!
Ciao Bella!

Things I have laerned:
1.) There is no place like home
2.) Being welcomed home by three yorkies might possibly be the best welcome
3.) Rain is a good thing
4.) It is simply very difficult to do cakes without a turntable!
5.) Believing in yourself and having confidence is crucial!
6.) God owns my future so i don't need to worry about it, He IS all powerful
7.) Happy dances in the kitchen with your sisters..are the best dances ever
8.) Careful when using cheese graters, pay attention :)
9.) Grease stripper will give you chemical burns that last forever
10.) Running feels amazing!

FUN FACT #22: When you make tea, don't put your cream in before your tea is done steaping....the fat from the cream seals the pores or something in the tea leaves...hence why they will not continue to steap! :)

There is no place like home!

I am in Crescent City, CA waiting for my turn in the shower so we can leave. I don't know if i can explain how excited i am to get home! I really wanna hold my doggies.
Even sawyer! The 90 lb. Labrador.

Yesterday we went throught the redwoods...and got to climb a redwood tree! I know we aren't supposed to, but it was fun nonetheless! We also got to skip rocks and wade into the gorgeous river!

Pictures are going to be coming soon, i just haven't uploaded them yet!
Just thought i would update everybody what was going on, i know i haven't blogged for a while.

I'll be back in WA and settled in tonight!
Until then!

Disaster keeps striking

SO this week started out pretty odd. I just had a funny feeling about it. That something was going to go wrong. And naturally, it did. My cakes weren't going the way i wanted and all that came with THAT instance.

My second cake ended up turning out okay, after long fight with it. I officiallyl decided that I will never ever stack a cake without refrigerating it in between. Not a good idea, even if you have fruit! I promise you will have a hard time. Unless you are an awesome cake master. Then you won't have a problem. But, me not being a cake master....it makes life a little difficult!:P But after Fondant and stripes, it was pretty.

Then me and therese went on a delivery. Ahhh the delivery. It was 2 hrs. away in Temecula. We were going along fine, talking and having a good ole time watching the cake be shaky. Then...Disaster struck. We were apprx. 100 yrds. from our final destination when we almost got in an accident, so therese breaked hard. My top tier i had been holding crashed into the dashboard and then we heard a thud. THEN i heard therese hollering, oh ciara!!! several times. And i winced and looked back. There was the gorgeous artichoke cake lying on the floor of her car. All battered and sad looking.

We were horrified. Absolutely horrified. We fixed it, only because the flourist was there. And she helped us! She did such an awesome job of covering up our nasty accident.

So all of the bad things that happened this week:
1.) therese couldn't find dry ice, anywhere, her total was $13.13
2.) my cakes, neither of them, worked out!
3.) THerese shot a crumb into her eye
4.) we almost got hit
5.) i grated my thumb
6.) I burned my fingers on teh pot
there are more, i just can't remember.
Now i'm going to go eat easter dinner with family :) tootles! Happy easter!

Almost home...filming done

Hello all!

So filming finished last saturday, and now we are on to the daily grind. It will be a literal grind next week! We have about 12 caeks to fill, ice and fondant....they will probably be wedding cakes. I only know one of them. Haha.

I finished my first cake all by myself this week! It was quite awesome. I found it to be really pretty...a simple, yet elegant Tiffany Box. The lady, Nazi wanted it to be blinged out! So i got the priviledge of putting all of the rhinestones on it. haha. yea...that took a while! But it ended up to be a very gorgeous cake!

I also made a keyboard out of chocolate and chocolate fondant. It is going to go with our Steam Funk( i think) cake. It is quite a cute cake! Unfortunately I am not able to put pictures of the finished cake up. Sadly...But here is the keyboard!

Did you know that there is Gelatinous Mutant Coconut? Yea, we went to a Filipino market haha...I got to get my Ube Spread, Marjie all of her favorite childhood food and then we feasted on yumminess! :) I shall have some yummy Ube Toast tomorrow! Woot! haha

Now...I'm listening to UFC fights in the background and my cousin's Ohhhh!!!! and Oooohhh!!! and ....mannnnn..haha...so entertaining..

Things I learned today:

1.) Chris runs an asian sweatshop! haha not..haha
2.) Steaming leaves without wires sucks cause it steam burns...

good weekend :)

SO this weekend was much needed. After the long week of filming, i don't think sleeping in has ever felt better! Ahh the life of a foodie :) Aren't I right? haha.

So I ate In 'n Out on sunday. I'm not sure if i was as impressed with it. It wasn't all that people cracked it up to be. Or maybe I blew it up in my mind larger than I should have? I am not quite sure which it is, but everybody should be happy...I ate a hamburger and I have eaten In 'n Out.

Tonight I made a yummy dinner :P It was Grilled chicken, Spinach/Avocado/Tomato/Zucchini salad, Sweet potato fries and aioli. Then for dessert...Grapefruit curd with fresh blueberries and granola. Super delicious and fresh!

Day one...

So we started the treachery today! No, i'm just kidding. It was filming, day one!
not too bad. Allot of bodies, but not too bad. The film people are nice, and entertainig.

My espresso cookies are beginning to be quite popular! Which makes me happy. I might do what Chef Mullins told me to do when i was in school. Make a chili pepper oreo! I took these and put chili in instead of espresso! It worked and they loved it! haha. Just wanted a cream filling.

This time I am sticking to the originals cause that is what were ordered! :)
But they are loved and it makes me happy that they are!

Tomorrow is day two of the filming! should be interesting ahaha. I have more hydrangea's to make. All well, practice with working with gumpaste, so i'm glad i get that experience!

Vegan...hmmm...

So last night I was supposed to make sticky buns with Zoe, but didn't because i got home a little late! So..we made cupcakes! I searched my favorite foodie website, www.tastespotting.com, for a recipe. Found a vegan one!

It was interesting. I used vinegar. Took me a sec to figure it out, but you know those volcanoes you make in school? Well, the same effect here! Except with delicious chocolate batter wrapped around the gas bubbles!

The came out gorgeous! Moist, but not too dense, i was very happy with them. I am going to try and make vanilla ones next. Just so that my sister can have them. and maybe she will have an egg-less cake! :) we'll see what happens!

Then at work today, i made like...a billion hydrangeas. Then Chris got back and said, i want more purple. Woo! Oh well, I suppose i'll be extremely good at making them by the time June rolls around and I make my cousin's wedding cake!
Hydrangeas aer easy, but you gotta be careful cause they break real easy!!
I broke more than i wanted to.

But that's all good.

Things I learned today:
1.) being in a bakery is fun
2.) my life is just crazy, but super fun!

Funny that I want to travel more, eh?
Not that I have funds to.

I did make sticky buns, but they ended up all going to the Larsons rather than home..haha. At least they got eaten! NOw i feel like cookign again, but i don't know what. I should have a plan though cause..haha..it is best if i don't just cook on a whim.

I did alllmost kidna sorta get four cakes done. Kinda not really. Got them all filled and iced! One got fully scraped and one alllmost fully scraped. I did only ok. Last week was definitely better. But that is ok. It feels like it will be a good week. Though I'm a little tired.

Food nerd, here..

I know I know...Ciara! Write more! But i am so tired at night, it isn't funny.
Lately I have come home and made cookies. Or some other goody. Usually something I can't have, but today i wanted to make something that I could eat!
So i did!
Peanut butter cookies. Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies. Yum is all i can say.

This week seemed very long to me. Did it to anybody else?
Finally saturday is tomorrow! I get to sleep in! I am so happy to sleep in. I am absolutely drained. But i love it! I am having so much fun! I am learning so so much.
Never knew i could be so exhausted though. I wonder if it is the drive?

Oh..the drive today. It took me 2 hrs. There was a grenade in the middle of I5, so they shut it down for 3 hours! So I got stuck in the middle of all of the back up. Ugh...it was so frustrating! 58 miles at an average of 5-15 mi. an hr. took me 2 hrs. to get home. I didn't like that very much!

alrighty...I'm slowly but surely crashing!
Goodnight All

Fun Food Stuffs...

I had a pretty good and relaxing day today! Well...lets say weekend. I got to hang out with friends yesterday and got everything done too! haha...AND I got time to experiment in the kitchen.

I made Creme Brulee today, which really isn't an experiment, other than the fact that i did it without a recipe haha. Debbie said it turned out great! It was gorgeous too!

Then with the left over egg whites i made my favorite! Pavlova! So, last time i made merengue(saturday night) I made it wrong. What i concluded was that I didn't put enough sugar in. You would think that I would know to use recipes by now, right? No, i didn't use one. So my merengue was kinda crappy. So this time I put enough sugar it! And it made gorgeous pavlovas! So I put it on my prepared pan and started it's baking. It came out of the oven looking ever so gorgeous...

Then I tried to take it off of my prepared pan. Can anybody guess what i prepared it with? Wax paper. I had my doubts as to whether it would work or not. And...it didn't. So i wasted all of those egg whites! And they were so gorgeous! I admit i ate some of the good parts. MMMM....tasty!

Then I got to working on my dinner/lunch for the next three days. I did Sauteed onion and asparagus with chicken, sun dried tomatoes and angel hair pasta. Turned out pretty good! When i added a little vinegar to it. I wish i had had balsamic...but didn't. I have been tempted to buy it..but it is so expensive!

Things I learned today:

1.) Flat rate boxes are awesome
2.) Don't use wax paper to bake.
3.) Working out really does feel good!

FUN FACT # 17: There are some epic looking bugs out there! (cars)

My life was nuts this past week...getting up early to do my internship...then making cake all week. Man alive...tiring...

We have been real busy at the bakery this week, as well. And today we were having tile put in in the kitchen. Then i had to drive Javier to Home Depot to get more grout..haha..just cause i had a truck! It was just madness there.

So Chris has a joke about me and Therese, he is going to announce on tv that THerese climbs coconut trees and I gut deer. Yea, and he probably will put it on TV. And that isn't a joke! haha...We are going to be filming in the next month. haha..

I did another square today! I got it all iced. but not scraped, all well. I'll scrape it first thing tomorrow. I was glad because my circle had straight sides from the get go! I was very happy cause that means that i'll have an easier time when it comes to scraping and making it level! :P

Now i'm in the process of making little luke-ie's cake! It will be a GI-Joe cake. Two tiers and camo. haha. Phase one of baking the cakes is now done. Woot! :P Tomorrow the buttercream will be made and stuff.

so long...

SOrry it has been a few days since i posted, *sad face*...
I have been extremely exhausted at night and simply forgotten to blog.

Not too many exciting things have been happening. I have mostly just been figuring out why the heck i can't get my butter cream to be straight and level...i am thinking that it is the way that i hold my spatula. (ugh) I am trying very very hard to master this!

Meanwhile i'm also practicing my sculpting and drawing skills. I got a sketch book for 3 dollars! woot! haha... I will also be able to take pics this week, i'm hoping. I am going to Costco today to exchange my very upsettingly broken camera. Because, every time i turn it on, it says there is a lense problem. Oh well, it shall be fixed for i am still within the one year warranty! (muahaha)

I have 10 weeks left! Don't cry for me! haha. It doesn't feel like it has only been three weeks since i left home. It feels like ages and ages! I am missing it very much. It is so different down here. Not having very many friends is kinda sad, but i'm making some. In fact, we are going to the movies tonight! I am also hanging with my cousins, and that is fun.

We watched Yes Man last night. Oh my goodness, funny as all get out! haha... We were going to watch another called accidental husband, but it ended up being like 9:00 before we ended the other and the kids had school today. All well, I might go later to watch it with Ms. Katie.

HOpefully that will work out great! Actually, it should. I was able to get my chocolate fans done. I figured out how to make it so that I was able to ake themm just how they are supposed to be. I have to make sure i have thicker chocolate.

Square edges with a touch of choco buttercream, much?

Today...

Ahhh today...

Today wasn't the funnest of days. So yesterday i didn't finish the cake i was working on, because it was a square. So today i didn't finish it until just before I left, and that was because i had help!

I don't know if i ever want to see another square cake ever again. haha. Or chocolate butter cream. I will, but i don't wanna. I will master them eventually, right?

I ended the day an hour and a half later than i was supposed to. Just because i didn't want to let myself go without finishing. Just because i can't do that. I was so mad at myself too! And frustrated. I suppose everybody has bad days right?

I got the priviledge of doing a square cake, too. That is very tough! I ended up being mad at myself cause i didn't finish my cakes today! Squares are harder than they look. THe butter cream will give you fits the whole time.

Other than all of that, today was pretty simple. Oh, we did have a surprise visit from the health inspector. That was interesting. She wasn't very nice. She was more strict than i have seen before! Oh well, though.

Things I learned today:

1.) Squares are hard
2.) don't microwave mascarpone cheese too long
3.) I can survive

FUN FACT #9: What don't kill you, makes you stronger. :P

Crash Course...

So today seemed like it was going pretty chill. We put stickers on the backs of business cards, washed dishes and plated up the tastings. Then...

Margie gets a call. The guy that had just picked up the cake, delivered the cake. But...the cake was supposed to go to the venue tomorrow. Not today! It was a wedding cake! and the couple called and told her, um..what is the cake doing here? So, we all had a freak out moment and then...

She sent me and the other intern, on our 5th day at the shop, to go rescue the cake! We mentally just flipped out! They trusted us with a 3-4 ft. tall WEDDING cake! So we cleared out the back of Therese's Hatchback Honda Fit, flattened the seats, and loaded the cart. AND...

We successfully got it back! Woot! We didn't destroy a single flower! And Margie was happy we got it back. We are now hired deliverer's hahhaa...

What i learned today:

1.) Californians roll their 'r's
2.) Expect the unexpected

Day four.

SO today was buttercream shells. Like, the little rims you see in bakeries. That, my friends is way harder than it looks. I did learn a tip though: Count. If you count, it helps! It really does, trust me!

I also got to put little adorable flowers on the Monster's inc. cake! That cake ended up looking so adorable! It was for a 1st birthday, kinda sad, wouldn't you say? I don't know, I think that my child won't have a special cake like that. Well...i'm not there yet am I? ;)

Whenever Margie has a job for me and Therese, she says, "Interns! I have a job for you!" It is most always well...always something she doesn't want to do. So we made beads. Fondant beads. Wasn't that bad. We kinda thought it was cool! haha.

So today, my cake turned out a little better. haha. I paid extra attention on keeping my spat straight!!

I also got to do acetate on chocolate! that was really cool. It transfers to the chocolate with a patter. So super cool! The way it transfers is strange, because it won't come off on your hands, just the chooclate!

I also got to paint more. Did you know that color matching is kinda hard? Finally did it and got the lid painted on the cake.

I have officially trained Tori! haha...She doesn't bark so bad when i come in anymore. She knows that i won't pet her until she is quiet.

Day Two

Ahhh...work. So much fun. Hard on the feet if you forget to have a rubber mat, but fun. From playing with fondant, to washing dishes...it is still fun.

So I worked with chocoalte buttercream today. That is quite different than regular old white butter cream. So i had to do the Icing and then i had to scrape it. While scraping it, we couldn't figure out why it kept on being sloped. Then all of a sudden Kristin, another intern, says, "Give that to me."
HOlds it up and it is bowed. Yea, Trying to level a cake witha bowed scraper isn't very easy.

So, I switched and everything went fine after that. Haha. Then i got to color some fondant and paint. Did you know that food coloring stains eve your hands? I have blue nails! haha. So awesome.

1.) Apply even pressure.
2.) Food color is crazy permanent.

There is one more intern that I'm working with. She is awesome. Super duper nice, and we went to the same school! Well, her's was in Hollywood, and mine in Seattle. But, still!.

So we got sent on a mission, to get lunch, blackberries and raspberries. It only kind of turned into an adventure. haha. Kind of. We did make it back though!

Today was the day that we all went on field trips! Dondi and his family went to Disney Land, and we first went to Leo Carillo's Ranch!A super cool place! Great places to take pictures and stuff.

Then we went to the beach, that was so much fun! There were sea anemones, and Mr. Brady was scared of them! The cutest thing you will ever see is a little boy scared of sea anemones! He was squealing he was so scared. I did actually touch one, because Clay made me...only because of that.

Then we went to the pool..now that was an adventure! Mandy and Chloe tried to dunk me several times. haha. Talk about hilarious!

After all of that adventure, we all came home and we had our dinner and I made cookies. Nothing is cuter than a 4 year old coming up to you and with an already chocolate chippey smile asks you," can i have another one?" Those cookies aren't going to last long whatsoever.

What we learned today:

1.) Chocolate chip cookies disapear fast in the Beers house!
2.) farts can come through walls(according to Mandy)
3.) little kids are terrors in water
5.) sea anemone's are squishy and feel weird

FUN FACT #3: Rocks in the ocean are very slippery.

So much adventure...

Today was a blast! We went to the San Diego Zoo!

We had fun just wandering around the zoo. There were many different animals than what we have in, you know, Point Defiance Zoo. There were ones that I think should be called the Zebra/Horse/Donkey/Cow. It is so funny looking!

We watched them working with the Elephants, too. It was funny because they treated them just like they would horses. The way they commanded them and everything.

Then we met Jake and his wife and kids. That was VERY fun! Payton and Luke are sweethearts. Well..okay..Payton has allot of energy, but she is just mostly brave. Kind of like Christina!

Luke is just cute as can be. He is so funny! He told us girls that we were big, as we ate BBQ ribs.(they were delicious, btw.)His daddy turned to him and said, "Hey! You don't say that to girls! You just say, you are taller than me!"

So funny!

Things we learned today:

1.) Don't put packing tape on bottles..it doesn't work.
2.) Phil's BBQ is delicious!
3.) Christina doesn't know the difference between Ostriches and Flamingos.
4.) Don't wear boots to a zoo.

FUN FACT #2: Our family is big. Our family is awesome.

and at last...

We are now there!!!

We are having a blast with everybody. It isn't only us here either! Dondi and his family are here, as well. We had a bowling tournament...haha...no I didn't win. My highest score was 148, I think my lowest aws 113. I think i rock! haha..

not!

Our drive was gorgeous! I was in fetal the majority of the time, so it kind of sucked, but oh well. The view was amazing. LIvermore has rolling hills and cows and gorgeous windmills and stuff.

When we were going through LA we didn't get to see the Hollywood thingy, but we did see: Disneyland, Magic Mountain and well..LA was exciting in itself.

Things we learned today:

1.) if your gps isn't working, make sure it is not on bycicle.
2.) HOld hot coffee tipped backwards.
3.) Driving through LA listening to country music feels rebbelish! (;

*FUN FACT #1: There is a garabage can at a gas station in carlsbad...it says Hot
Beverages. BAHA!

half way there!

Last night wasn't exactly pleasant...

The people next door to us were very loud, all the way though apprximately 1:00 am!
Christina even kicked the door, then threw a shoe at it...then gave up.

So my mom got up this morning and wasn't careful to be quiet. Infact, she slammed the microwave and stuff( i find it hilarious!).

We took ourselves down even farther south, through what you wouldn't think to be California! They were actually hick towns! One almost resembled enumclaw to a 't'...right down to the scent of cows.
Things we learned today:

1.) Elk chill in CA
2.) Australian baristas call the stuff in your oatmeal thigamabobs
3.) Australian baristas are sweet!
4.) GPS's are persistent
5.) The majority of the workers in Eureka's Target are dumpy guys with beards
6.) Don't take Highway 20 to I5 to get to Livermore.
7.) I want to live in N CA someday.
